What is NIOS?
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Established in 1989, NIOS is the world's largest open schooling system, providing flexible and quality education to learners across India and abroad. It offers Secondary (Class 10), Senior Secondary (Class 12), Vocational, and Life Enrichment courses.
NIOS is designed for students who are unable to continue their education through regular schools due to personal, professional, financial, medical, or other reasons. Its flexible learning system allows students to study at their own pace while receiving nationally recognized certificates that are accepted for higher education, competitive examinations, and employment, subject to the eligibility requirements of the respective institution or employer.
Public Examination
NIOS conducts Public Examinations twice every year:
- April–May Session
- October–November Session
On-Demand Examination System (ODES)
NIOS also offers the On-Demand Examination System (ODES) for eligible learners at designated examination centres. This system allows students to appear for examinations when they feel fully prepared, without waiting for the next public examination session. ODES is available only for subjects and centres notified by NIOS.
